hostage

A hostage is when someone is taken by another person and they cannot leave.

For example, imagine you and your friend are playing a game of pretend. Your friend pretends to be a pirate and you pretend to be a princess. Suddenly, the pirate says, 'I am taking you hostage!' That means the pirate is pretending to take you and not let you leave until you do something for them.
