To designate means to choose or pick something or someone for a special purpose. For example, when we play a game, we can designate one person to be the leader. The leader gets to make all the important decisions!

To designate can also mean to give a special name or title to something or someone. For example, when we have a pet dog, we can designate them as the official family guard dog. They will protect us and keep us safe!
