When you are alert, it means you are paying attention and ready to notice things around you. For example, when you are crossing the street, you need to be alert to look for cars coming.

Alert can also mean a loud noise or a signal that tells you something important is happening. For example, when the fire alarm goes off, it makes a loud alert sound to let us know there might be a fire.
